How I work

Counselling orientation

The type of counselling can vary depending on the issues the client is experiencing. My primary theoretical orientation is humanistic or person-centered. However I may draw from Cognitive-Behaviour-Therapy or Systemic Family approaches to deal with the problems you hope to address. Each of these approaches is well established and researched within the field of psychology and counselling.

Initial Interview

Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. During this time, we can both decide if I am the best person to provide the services you need. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you my impressions of what our work will include and we will establish goals for your therapy that we will revisit regularly. You should evaluate this information along with your own view of whether you feel comfortable working with those goals.

Length of therapy

People come to therapy with many different goals in mind. Some want to resolve a specific problem or get help making an important decision. With these clients, we may chose to work short-term - in other words,  just until the specific problem has been resolved. Other clients may be looking to make a more comprehensive change in their lives - either within their couple or family, or as an individual. In this case, we may need to use a longer time-frame. As a trained counsellor,  I am able to tailor your therapy to meet your specific needs.

Fee

My counselling fee is for a fifty-minute session. I will advise you of the rate when you first contact me.

You will be expected to pay for each session at the time it is held.

Limits on Confidentiality

The law protects the privacy of all communications between a client and a counsellor.

Situations where I will be permitted or required to disclose information without your consent include the following:

  • If I have reason to believe that a child has been abused or is at risk of harm;
  • If I have reasonable cause to believe that you are a threat to yourself or others;
  • If you are involved in a court proceeding and your client case notes are subpoened by the court. If such a situation arises, I will make every effort to fully discuss it with you before taking any action and seek to limit my disclosure to what is necessary.

Code of Ethics

As a professional counsellor, I abide by the Code of Ethics & Good Practice of the Counsellors and Psychotherapists Association of NSW Inc.
